A Song of Penitence - Free Copy
A Song of Penitence (SATB and organ) is a musical setting of the somewhat obscure 14th Canticle in The Book of Common Prayer (Episcopal). It is a prayer that King Manasseh offered after being freed from his captivity by the Assyrians and after giving up his idolatrous ways. The prayer is part of the Old Testament Apocrypha. 2 Chronicles 33:18 mentions Manasseh’s prayer but does not include the text.
Its use as a canticle is prescribed for the Daily Offices and, as such, could certainly be used as a choral presentation as prescribed and during Evensong. It also makes a nice anthem during Lent or other times where a penitent heart is the focus.
