Mary of Magdala, why do you weep?
Mary Magdalene’s experience of the Resurrection did not start off with joy. It started off with concern because she was sure that someone had removed His body from the tomb. An angel explained to her what had happened yet she remained unconvinced. Then, the risen Jesus, Himself, assured her until she realized who He was. As the Gospel continues, Mary rushes to tell the others, and Jesus appears to the disciples as well despite their hiding in fear. Indeed, the message was Jesus of Nazareth had arisen from the dead!
Mary of Magdala, why do you weep tells this story with clarity and then proclaims the greatest news of all: He is arisen! Set for SATB, this new work utilizes the alto section as Mary and the tenor section as Jesus during the first part. Alto and tenor soloists could also be used. Then the who chorus chimes in as the story moves to the disciples. Finally, an acclamation and alleluias complete this unique and beautiful anthem.
