For God so loved the world
One of the first Bible verses I learned as a child was John 3:16. That is probably true for many of us. I also have clear memories of the choir at my childhood church singing John Stainer’s “God so loved the world” from his oratorio, Crucifixion. It is a beautiful setting still commonly used today.
My composition around this text, unlike Stainer’s, uses a melody in Gregorian chant style with homophonic 5ths as vocal parts above the melody. It has a beauty of its own that, with God’s grace, may become as well loved as that of John Stainer.
